Abstract The purpose of this research was to study the effect of afterschool program for promoting the
physical fitness on sports and recreation in kindergarten and elementary students. 200 students at
Municipal 7 Rotfai Songkhro School at kindergarten 3 – Grade 6 were purposively sampled as the
subjects. The samples were divided into 2 groups: under 6 year olds and 7-10 year olds. The first group
had experienced the 20-hour-afterschool program for kindergarten 3 – Grade 3 and the other group had
learnt the 20-hour-afterschool program for Prathom 2-3. The instruments were : 1) the afterschool
program for promoting the physical fitness on sports and recreation in kindergarten and elementary
students 2) Physical Education Department’s physical fitness test for Thai children aged 4-6 3) Physical
Education Department’s Physical fitness test for for Thai children aged 7-18. The collected data were
analyzed using means, standard deviation and t - test.
The results were as follows:
1. The physical fitness of kindergarten 3 – Grade 1 boys for the 20 meter dash between
“before” and “after” treatment was significantly different at 0.05 levels, but Body Mass Index: BMI, sit
and Reach, bicep curl 30 seconds, standing broad jump, sit-ups 30 seconds, and shuttle and zig zag run
were not different.
2. The physical fitness of kindergarten 3 – Grade 1 girls for Body Mass Index: BMI and
bicep curl 30 seconds between “before” and “after” treatment were significantly different at 0.05
levels, but sit and Reach, 20 meter dash, standing broad jump, and shuttle and zig zag run were not
different.
3. The physical fitness of Grade 2-3 boys for Skinfold thickness and zig-zag run were
significantly different at 0.05 levels, but sit and reach, standing broad jump, sit-ups 60 seconds,
pushups 30 seconds, and distance run were not different.
4. The physical fitness of Grade 2-3 girls for Skinfold thickness, sit-ups 60 seconds and zig-zag
run were significantly different at 0.05 levels, but sit and reach, standing broad jump, pushups 30
seconds, and distance run were not different.
