Abstract Background/Purpose The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of Thai dance training on neuromuscular function in Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) Methods A randomized controlled trial with 38 participants (aged 60-75, MNSI > 2) was conducted. The intervention group (n = 19) underwent 12 weeks of Thai dance training (3 days/week), while the control group (n = 19) received home exercise advice. Ankle muscle strength was measured with a handheld dynamometer, and balance was evaluated using the Functional Reach Test (FRT) and the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) with the Biodex Balance System. Results After 12 weeks, the measures showed a significant time effect for dorsiflexion on the left side (DFLt) (p = 0.009) and right side (DFRt) (p = 0.004), as well as for plantar flexion on the left side (PFLt) and right side (PFRt) (p < 0.001), ankle inversion on the left side (ANLt) (p = 0.004), ankle eversion on the right side (AERt) (p = 0.014), FRT (p = 0.009), double-leg foam (DLFo) (p < 0.001), and total error of BESS (TErrBESS) (p < 0.001). There was a significant group effect for FRT (p = 0.006), double-leg firm (DLFi) (p = 0.001), DLFo (p = 0.003), single-leg firm (SLFi) (p = 0.002), and average BESS (p < 0.001). A significant group × time interaction effect was observed for PFLt (p = 0.003), FRT (p = 0.004), DLFo (p = 0.009), and average BESS (p = 0.020). Conclusion Thai dance training significantly improved ankle strength and balance, especially in plantar and dorsiflexion, in individuals with DPN. These findings suggest that Thai dance may be an effective intervention to enhance neuromuscular function in this population.
